Definition of Brooks Range, Alaska
The northernmost part of the
Rocky Mountains is known as the Brooks Range, in northern
Alaska. The mountain range extends almost 600 miles
(1,000 km) in an east-west direction across northern Alaska
and is a rugged, barren, windblown and snow-covered uninhabited
range. The Brooks Range separates central Alaska’s
Yukon Basin from the oil-rich northern coastal plain, including
the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and the northern
petroleum reserve.
