DEFINITION OF CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETTS

A sandy cape that protrudes

into the Gulf of Maine on the Atlantic Ocean from the east

coast of Massachusetts, United States. It is curved like an outstretched

and upraised arm, protecting Cape Cod Bay

between its inner curve and the mainland. The once fertile

fishing grounds of George’s Bank are to the southeast, and

Nantucket Sound separates the islands of Nantucket and

Martha’s Vineyard from the Cape. Cape Cod, the islands of

Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, as well as Long Island,

are terminal and recessional moraines from the last Pleistocene

glaciation, so they contain sand and gravel derived

from Canada and New England. Many parts of the Cape

have been reworked into giant sand dunes both in the

periglacial environment and in more recent times. Cape Cod

is a favorite summertime vacation spot for New Englanders,

especially those from the Boston area.
