Light winds in the region near the equator, or
more technically the region near the equator characterized by
light shifting winds and low pressure. The weather in this
region tends to be monotonous, hence the common expres
sion “down in the doldrums.” Air is warmed in this region
and rises to form huge cumulus clouds and convective hot
towers that release tremendous amounts of latent heat, making
the air more buoyant, and driving the atmospheric
Hadley Cells.
