A gravimeter is an instrument that measures
and determines the specific gravity of a substance or measures
variations in the gravitational field of the Earth. Common
gravimeters often are made with a simple mass-spring
assembly. By hanging a mass on the spring we can account
for how much gravity is affecting the mass by how far the
spring has stretched. Simple gravimeters are easy to operate
but lack the precision needed to view the minute changes in
the gravitational field of the Earth. Modern gravimeters are
much more accurate and are employed in the field to study
the gravitational field of the Earth but are much more complicated
and employ special springs known as “zero springs.”
