When glaciers carve out a mountainous
landscape some small, high-elevation tributary glaciers will
merge with larger valley or trunk glaciers near the upper parts
of the larger glacier. These two glaciers then flow together as
one, with the upper glacier carving out a high-elevation glacial
valley, and the main valley or trunk glacier carving out a deeper
valley at a lower elevation. When the glaciers recede from
the landscape, the valley from the higher glacier will merge
with the lower valley high on the steep slopes of the lower valley,
forming a hanging valley. Streams that flow in the upper
valley typically form cascades and waterfalls where the hanging
valley meets the main valley, a famous example being
Yosemite Falls in Yosemite Valley, California.
