An elongate, relatively uplifted fault block bounded
by faults on its long sides. Horsts are commonly found in
extensional tectonic settings, alternating with down-dropped
fault blocks known as grabens. Many are tilted on rotational
normal faults, whereas others may essentially stay at one elevation
while the surrounding terrane sinks in horsts. Some
well-known large horsts include the Danakil horst in the Afar
region of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and many of the fault blocks
in the basin and range province of the western United States.
