DEFINITION OF ICHNOFOSSILS

Fossilized structures such as tracks, burrows,

trails, footprints, tubes, borings, or tunnels produced by the

activities of an animal. The activities may include walking,

crawling, climbing, boring, tunneling, or resting on or in soft

sediment. Ichnofossils, also known as trace fossils, do not

preserve any parts of the animal that made the structures, but

only their traces. They are typically marked as a raised line or

depression in a sedimentary rock.
