An ion microprobe allows the study and
analysis of complex isotopic composition of most of the elements
in the periodic table. The ion microprobe is used widely
in geology to decipher the geochronological dating of samples
and in the study of the formation and creation of mineralizing
systems. The ion microprobe is used mainly in the study of
stable isotope geochemistry that examines the changes in isotopic
composition of elements that are caused by either physical
or chemical processes. The use of the ion microprobe is
increasing in the study of isotopic composition of materials
because modern technology has increased the accuracy and
made the use of the ion probe easier and less expensive.
