The Joides Resolution is a naval
research ship named after the famous H.M.S. Resolution that
was commanded by Captain James Cook and served as his
main vessel as he explored the Pacific Ocean and Antarctic
area. The ship is equipped with a drill that enables it to
obtain core samples and sediment samples from the seafloor
more than three miles (5 km) below the sea surface. Several
coordinated thrusters enable the ship to remain stationary in
violent seas to obtain accurate and precise drilling samples.
The samples enable scientists to study such things as earthquakes,
volcanoes, seafloor spreading, and natural resources.
The Joides Resolution is a privately owned ship that is
leased to the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) that is funded
by the U.S. National Science Foundation and several other
partner countries.
