A glacial landform such as a low mound, knob, or
ridge composed of stratified fluvial/glacial sand and gravel,
deposited by a glacial stream. Some kames form as deltas or
fans along the margins of deltas, others form in low spots
beneath glaciers, and still others form in ponds on the glacial
surface or on stagnant ice left by retreating glaciers. Kames
may occur in groups, forming kame fields, or as a long line of
kames along the front of a stagnant glacier, leaving a kame
moraine behind when the glacier retreats. Kame terraces consist
of stratified fluvial/glacial sand and gravel deposited
between a glacier and a valley wall, commonly left standing
as a ridge on and parallel to the slope of a valley wall separating
unglaciated topography above from the glaciated valley
floor below.
