A metamorphic rock derived from recrystallized
limestone or dolostone. It typically has a granoblastic texture
with interlocking crystals and may contain colorful swirly
patterns that represent deformed primary layers such as beds
or veins and other secondary features. Marble is commonly
used as an ornamental building stone, and rocks that qualify
to be called marble by the building industry include true marbles,
as well as any limestone or dolostone that can take a
polish. Pure marbles may be pure white, and easily sculpted,
and have thus been favored for ornamental buildings and
statues for centuries.
