The mass spectrometer is a tool used
by scientists to identify and analyze unknown compounds, to
analyze and quantify known compounds, and to provide
information and analysis of structural and chemical properties.
The application and use of the mass spectrometer in
society is known as mass spectrometry and is useful in many
scientific fields. The mass spectrometer can be used to analyze
almost any substance known to man. The mass spectrometer
consists of an analyzer that contains a vacuum by
which ions are removed from the sample by an electromagnetic
field. The captured ions are then sorted according to
size, velocity, and charge.
