The tallest mountain in North America,
Mount McKinley soars to 20,320 feet (6,194 m) in central
Alaska’s Alaska Range. The mountain also boasts one of the
steepest vertical rises in the world, with its base nearly at sea
level, and the south slope rises an amazing 17,000 feet (5,180
m) in 12 miles (19 km). The mountain was named in 1897 by
W. A. Dickey, after President William McKinley. However,
the local Athabaskan Indians called the mountain Denali,
meaning the high one, and the national park that surrounds
the mountain is also called Denali. In 1913, Hudson Stuck,
Harry Karstens, Robert Tatum, and Walter Harper became
the first people to successfully climb Mount McKinley. Five
major and many smaller glaciers and ice falls emanate from
the mountain and flow into lower elevations. The mountain
is located between branches of the active Denali fault and is
actively rising and affected by numerous earthquakes.
