This government agency conducts research and
gathers data about the global oceans, atmosphere, space, and
sun and applies this knowledge to science and service that
touch lives of all Americans. NOAA’s mission is to describe
and predict changes in the Earth’s environment and conserve
and wisely manage the nation’s coastal and marine resources.
NOAA’s strategy consists of seven interrelated strategic goals
for environmental assessment, prediction, and stewardship.
These include: (1) advance short-term warnings and forecast
services, (2) implement seasonal to interannual climate forecasts,
(3) assess and predict decadal to centennial change, (4)
promote safe navigation, (5) build sustainable fisheries, (6)
recover protected species, and (7) sustain healthy coastal
ecosystems. NOAA runs a Web site (http://www.noaa.gov/)
that includes links to current satellite images of weather hazards,
issues warnings of current coastal hazards and disasters,
and has an extensive historical and educational service. The
National Hurricane Center (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/) is a
branch of NOAA and posts regular updates of hurricane paths
and hazards. NOAA includes the following organizations:
1. NOAA National Weather Service (http://www.nws.noaa.
gov/),
2. NOAA Satellites and Information (http://www.nesdis.noaa.
gov/),
3. NOAA Fisheries (http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/),
4. NOAA Ocean Service (http://www.oceanservice.noaa.gov/),
5. NOAA Research (http://www.research.noaa.gov/),
6. NOAA Marine & Aviation Operations (http://www.nmao.
