DEFINITION OF PALEOLITHIC

The first division of the Stone Age in archaeological

time, marked by the first appearance of humans and

their associated tools and workings. The time of the Paleolithic

corresponds generally with the Pleistocene (from 1.8

million years ago until 100,000 years ago) of the geological

time scale, but varies somewhat from place to place.
