The polarizing microscope is an
optical measuring device and is also used as an instrument for
the detailed examination of specimens. In addition to standard
microscope optics, the microscope contains two polarizpolarizing
ing lenses. These lenses polarize the incoming light source to
enable the measurements to be made. There is one polarizer
in the condenser and another on the slider above the objective,
both are adjustable and can be set to examine different
specimens. The specimen is illuminated with the polarized
light, and its rotation or twinning of the light can be determined.
The polarizing microscope is particularly useful in the
study of rocks and minerals with particular characteristics.
Scientists in the fields of chemical microscopy and optical
mineralogy mostly use the polarizing microscope for its ability
to polarize the light onto a specimen.
