The diverse phylum of single-celled organisms
that includes the foraminifera, radiolaria, thecamoebians,
silicoflagellates, and tintinnids, and their fossil records.
Most protozoa are soft-bodied and do not leave a fossil
record. Modern zoological classifications regard the protozoa
as a subkingdom of the Animalia Kingdom, excluding
the algae, whereas paleontologists include these and other
botanical groups with the protozoa. Geologists and paleontologists
include botanical unicellular organisms such as
acritarchs, calcareous nannofossils, chitinozoans, diatoms,
and dinoflagellates in this phylum and refer to them by the
terms protozoans or protistids. The protistids are descendants
of the early and simple prokaryotes from the Archean,
but since the early forms were soft-bodied, they rarely leave
fossil records.
