The structurally complex zone marking the
place where two once separated tectonic plates have collided
and the oceans that once separated the plate have closed.
Sutures may mark the places where two continents that were
previously on opposite sides of an ocean basin have collided,
or they may mark the collision zones between continents, arc
terranes, oceanic plateaus, or other seafloor topographic highs.
Suture zones are very complex and structurally variable, typically
marked by numerous shear zones, including mylonite
zones, faults, and mélanges. Ophiolites are commonly found
decorating the suture zones. These may range from complete
ophiolite sequences to partial ophiolites, to thin mafic or ultramafic
slivers in deep-level high-grade shear zones.
