Any long, narrow, and relatively flat or gently
inclined surface that is narrower than a plain and bounded
by an ascending slope on one side and a descending slope on
the other side. Terraces form in a variety of different settings.
River terraces are found in many valleys as elevated surfaces
on a single side or both sides of the present river and floodplain
surfaces and mark a former higher level of the river sys-BC
tem. Rivers and streams may downcut through older terraces
for a variety of reasons, including climatically influenced
changes in discharge, or uplift of the river valley and slopes
causing a change in the river profile. Coastal or beach terraces
are constructional surfaces that slope seaward (or lakeward)
and are built by sedimentary deposits. Coastal terraces
denote uplift of the land surface or lowering of sea levels.
