Microscopic single-celled plants found in the
oceans and freshwater bodies. They have shells (also known
as tests) made of silica that form thick accumulations known
as siliceous oozes in quiet marine environments. Many
diatoms have distinctive markings on their tests known as
frustules, and many varieties are used as index fossils to
determine the age of ancient deposits.
