An electron microprobe is an instrument
that actively bombards samples of a material with highenergy
electrons. It is basically an electron microscope that is
able to perform important scientific experiments such as Xray
microanalysis to measure atomic density and elemental
abundances. It is necessary to cover the specimen with a thin
carbon or metallic coating to prevent the buildup of electric
charges on the sample.
Most of the elements on the periodic table can be analyzed
using the electron microprobe. The electron microprobe
is useful because it can analyze small areas, and that enables
scientists to compare that small sample area to the rest of the
sample being analyzed. Scientists use the electron microprobe
in a wide range of academic fields such as engineering, geology,
biology, chemistry, and physics.
