A geologic unit of time longer than an age and
shorter than a period. A corresponding series of rocks is
deposited during an epoch; for instance, the Eocene series
was deposited during the Eocene epoch. Sometimes the term
is applied informally to refer to an interval of time characterized
by a specific condition, such as the glacial epoch, or the
global hothouse epoch.
