An interval of geologic time that is the next longest after
an eon, and the corresponding erathem of rocks deposited
during this time interval. For instance the Phanerozoic Eon is
divided in the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic Eras. Some
divisions of Precambrian time place the Archean and Proterozoic
as eras in the Precambrian Eon, preceded by the Hadean
Eon, whereas others divide the Proterozoic Eon into the Paleoproterozoic,
Mesoproterozoic, and Neoproterozoic Eras, and
the Archean Eon into the Early, Middle and Late Eras.
