Euxinic environments are characterized by restricted
circulation with stagnant, typically anaerobic conditions. Euxinic
basins include some fiords, estuaries with ridges or sills
near their outlets, lagoons, restricted seas, and narrow foredeep
basins restricted by tectonic thrusting. Deposition in euxinic
basins typically forms hydrogen-sulfide–rich mudstones
and black organic-rich shales, and pyrite-rich or graphitic
shales. These are colloquially known as “stinky black shales”
by field geologists in mountain belts around the world.
