A group of 11 long, narrow glacial lakes in
western New York near Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca. The
lakes are elongate in a north-south direction reflecting the
direction of glacial movement. The largest of the lakes, Seneca
and Cayuga, are each more than 35 miles (56 km) long. Geologically,
the area is underlain by Devonian limestone and
shale, including many richly fossiliferous beds. The Finger
Lake region is famous for grapes and outdoor recreation.
