The combination of two light nuclei to form a
heavy nucleus, along with the release of a large amount of
energy. The atomic bomb combined nuclei of hydrogen to
form helium resulting in the sudden release of huge quantities
of energy. Nuclear fusion is the main process that powers
stars. It operates at very high temperatures and pressures,
where the atomic nuclei can approach each other at high
enough velocities to overcome the repulsive force between
similarly charged atoms. Once at close range the strong
nuclear force fuses the nuclei together, releasing large
amounts of energy. Significant amounts of research are being
done on attempts to find ways to use nuclear fusion to produce
energy without causing nuclear explosions.
