A division of the Proterozoic of the Canadian
Shield, originally based on Sir William Logan’s 1845 field
examination of the region north of Lake Huron, in the Lake
Timiskaming area. He named the Huronian after a group of
conglomerates and slates that were found to rest unconformably
over older Laurentian granite, now known to be
Archean in age. The Huronian was later extended to the Lake
Superior region by Alexander Murray during 1847–1858.
