In water-gas reservoirs, the common
practice of pumping water at high pressure into wells, so that
the rocks in the reservoir fracture, generating new porosity
that will aid in the oil extraction. The pressure needed to
fracture the rocks is equal to the minimum principal stress.
The fractures that form will be parallel to the maximum principal
stress, enabling greater fluid flow through the reservoir.
