DEFINITION OF KLIPPE

An erosional remnant or outlier of the hanging wall

of a nappe that is completely surrounded by rocks of the

footwall. Klippen were originally part of a larger thrust or

nappe complex, but erosion removed the parts of the nappe

between the klippe and the main part of the nappe.
