A group of brown or yellowish-brown amorphous
hydrous ferric oxides that occur naturally, usually as a weathering
product of other iron-bearing minerals. Limonite also
occurs as an organic or inorganic precipitate in lakes, ponds,
bogs, springs, and in marine settings, and in some places coats
surfaces such as twigs, or around earthen masses. The exact
composition of limonite is unknown, but it is probably a mixture
of hematite, goethite, and lepidocrocite. Occurring in a
variety of forms, including botryoids, fibrous or stalactitic
columns, and reniform and mammillary masses, limonite also
goes by the names bog iron ore and brown ochre.
