Water that has recently come from the Earth’s
atmosphere. The term is usually used in studies of groundwater,
to distinguished water that has resided in ground for
extended periods of time versus water that has recently infiltrated
the system from rain, snow melt, or stream infiltration.
Measurements of oxygen isotopes and other elements are typically
used to aid this differentiation, as water from different
source shows different isotopic compositions.
