A semiarid grassy and nearly treeless upland plain
found in midlatitude areas of southeastern Europe, Asia, and
North America. The only Southern Hemisphere steppe is the
veldt of South Africa. Most grasses on steppes are short and
occur in sparse clumps, with abundant bare soil. Steppes are
considered to be more arid than the prairies of the United
States, but more humid than deserts. Soils in steppes are dry
and have a water deficiency, with water stored only at significant
depths. The grasses obtain the water they need for
growth during short spring rainfall events and typically
become dormant by midsummer.
