DEFINITION OF STOKES LAW

A physical formula describing the rate of settling

of a spherical ball in a fluid, as derived by Sir George

Stokes. The formula V = Cr2 relates velocity (V) of the particle

(in cm/sec), the particle’s radius, and a constant (C) relating

the relative densities of the particle, fluid, and acceleration of

gravity, and the viscosity of the fluid.
