A highly weathered red soil rich in iron oxides, aluminum,
and kaolin, and nearly devoid of primary silicates
except for quartz. It is a common residual product of extreme
tropical weathering, developing on many different types of
bedrock. Many third-world populations cut and dry bricks
from laterites, using these for building.
